Understanding Shutter Speeds

Shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter stays open. For the DSLR camera it is the length of time the image sensor is exposed to light. In the camera the shutter speed determines the amount of light let in when taking the photo. In the pictures you see that the shutter speed affects the quality of the photo when the subject is in motion. The relationship of shutter speed to the exposure triangle is that when you change the shutter speed you also need to change the ISO and aperture to make the light meter balanced.

Understanding Aperture

Aperture: The size of the opening in the lens that permits light to hit the film/digital sensor.
Aperture in the camera works by letting a certain amount of light into the camera to change the effect of the photo. In the first photo the lower aperture number lets less light in so the background is blurred out. In the second photo the aperture is letting more light in so the background is much more clear. Aperture is part of the exposure triangle. Changing the aperture affects the shutter speed and ISO. When you change the aperture number you also need to change the ISO and/or shutter speed to make the light meter balanced. The light meter needs to be in balance in order to produce a good quality photo.

Photographic Themes

I thought the shooting assignment was very challenging. I also think it was a very good project to have in the beginning of the year to get the creativity flowing. The end result of my project was better than I expected. I like how you see my personality by looking at my end product. My favorite photo is the one of the three girls laughing. This is my favorite photo because I used it to represent happiness and I think it has that emotion written all over it. I think it is a dynamic photo and one of the best photos I've taken.

11.  Lazy		This picture represents laziness because the dog is relaxed and laying down.

14.  Growth		The word growth makes me think of a tree because they are always growing and changing.

19.  Hope		Hope means to me believing in changing something to make things better. I support Down Syndrome and this shirt shows the logo and symbol for Central Pennsylvania Down Syndrome.
